International Day of Women and Girls in Science – 1 Day Just Doesn’t Give Enough Time to Showcase The Many Stars Out There …
I am delighted to run this piece with Carla Gerlach - Sales Manager at Episurf. Carla is a lovely inspirational individual. She is so amazingly switched on and clear in her thinking about what she wants from her career in science . Far much more than I was at her age. I love running pieces on why people have come into this industry and how they are finding the reality having finally made it.
I think Carla is a superstar . Thanks for your time Carla !
What led you to take on the role you have today / where did your passion for medical devices / medical technology come from?
I have been a tech enthusiast all my life and also love medicine. With the subject area of Medical Engineering, I was able to find the perfect mix of both. I invested a lot of time in research during my studies and am now looking forward to being actively involved in the market and gaining experience.
The future of many depends on excellent medical devices. There are an incredible number of innovative medical products on the market, but they are simply unknown. Getting these products known and on the market is extremely challenging - I would like to take on this challenge.
What do your family and friends think about the role you do and the fact you are frequently in theatre?
They are proud and believe that this is exactly the right thing for me. They have respect for my job and also the responsibility.
What makes you want to leap out of bed on a workday and get on with matters at hand?
When you work in the field of medical technology every day is different and brings new challenges. In such a small company, you can get involved and make a difference.
What is it that your company / team do that you find so motivating / humbling / satisfactory?
The team spirit within the company and the passion for the product.
Why did you choose your company in particular and what exciting plans and future are you working towards next – what are your priorities?
Episurf is a young, innovative company from Stockholm, with a very high quality standard. My goal is to help build a market, so every patient worldwide - who's best treatment option would be Episealer - gets one.
If you had found a time capsule from the future – it’s from 2032 – what do you think our market would look like/ what might be different for patients / surgeons?
I cannot answer what will happen in the future, but I would like to see medicine become more digitalized and personalized. That each patient is considered holistically across disciplines and over the individual lifetime.
What advice would you give to someone who's looking to enter this space ? Whether that's a fresh grad straight out of university, but then also someone looking to transition their career?
Do it! Sale Management in Orthopedics is very challenging, but always worth a try :)
Do you have any final thoughts / comments you’d like to make?
As a woman in Medical Technology, you are a minority, but you can make a change.
Finally, what song would get you jigging on the dance floor?
Supergirl (Anna Naklab, Alle Farben & YouNotUs).
